Made it

Ugh.

Much longer trip than expected. We hoped for 16-17 hours driving and ended up with about 20 hours. Not really fun after a while. Tomorrow will be okay.

I have yet to really sleep. I navigated, had the option to sleep and then stopped being tired so I stayed up. Apart from the occasional cat nap I've been awake for over a day.

The wifi is currently down so, if they don't fix it, any further entries this week may be brief. The place we're staying at is nice and not at the same time. I wasn't sure what to expect and we're not sure it's what we wanted.

Oh well, it's about the parks. Like I said, tomorrow will be okay.

Just in Case

For awhile I was under the impression that everyone I knew was reading this blog. When I started repeating stories I told here while in conversation and they were treated as new to the listener, I grew to feel that almost no one read this thing, which was relaxing in a way. Wednesday I had two people at totally different times reference this thing so I've started to swing back to the thought that I might actually have a slight audience. Which is nice.

One of my goals has always been to post something daily, even if it's not a lot of text, but just something to keep it a habit. I've lost track of the last time I failed to post so I consider that to have been pretty successful. With that said, forgive me if I fall off the rails regarding that goal for the next week or so. I'm going on vacation.

I don't go on vacation often and even less so for a week at a time. I've had this scheduled and mostly paid for nine or ten months ago, it got rescheduled a couple of times, and, while there's part of me that questions what I'm taking vacation from, a lot of me also argues that there's no overwhelming reason not to go.

I should have the laptop with me and am expecting an internet connection so if time and energy permit there will be no interruption in service. If there is, now you'll know why. Because I'm warm. In Florida. Visiting with the Muppets and Spider-Man. Not at the same time of course. Ooo, but if I did, that would be fun, wouldn't it?

My fun day

All times are 'ish'.

9:00 - Settling down for my morning Internet surfing, everything goes dark. The power is out in the neighborhood. Great. At least I've got some comics to read.

11:00 - Tired of reading. I'll get some work done on my writing.

11:10 - Power comes back on. Imagine that. Forget it, I'm still gonna write for awhile.

12:00 - Head for my main computer to catch up. The light blinks on and then shuts off immediately. Reseat power, change outlet, let it sit unplugged and try again. Nothing. Go super pissed which does nothing positive for my back. Try to pull the backup Mac Mini into the big league but find out that it's not compatible with my big monitor or speakers. Great. Become too mad to think straight. Sit for awhile, eat, shower, anything to relax a bit.

14:30 - Start doing a little digging online. Find a reset button inside the case. Take deep breath and push button using pencil. Plug in power and monitor, nothing else. It works.

15:00 - Start plugging in other stuff. Successfully connect to Internet again. Relief starts to set it. Get text telling me that other computer work I did last week is still successful. Start to feel like a relaxed genius. Been awhile.

So, it could have been worse.

Review: 'The Next Doctor'

The Christmas Specials tend to be a bit simple in plot and very whiz-bang. In that, this was no different. I thought the plot worked. The mystery part of it is not too hard to figure out once you start getting pieces to the puzzle but it wasn't obvious either. Even after it's figured out, there's still a bit more to piece together, so it worked nicely.

I didn't really care for the Cyber-animals or whatever they sort-of called them. I'm for simple effects but this looked like someone tossed a rusty Cyber helmet on a beat-up bearskin rug and told someone else to go run around in it a bit. The whole concept seemed rushed. How intelligent were they meant to be anyway? It never feels very defined.

As goofy as it was, I liked the 'ship' at the end. But of course, it's known that I like such things.

On his way out, Russell gives us a present. In a moment that makes sense in the story, we get to see all ten Doctors in a row, from Hartnell to Tennant. Which was nice.

Thumbs up.

More about the Archive

More cleaning in the archive. I've started to move onto 'do I really want all that?' which is a nice way of looking at the DC stuff in my collection.

As my friends know, I'm a Marvel guy. DC, not so much. I pick up the occasional series or a creator's run, but nothing much. I'm not completely sure why this is. I certainly watched DC cartoons as a kid and have a couple Batman and Superman comics from being a kid but they didn't spark me into buying comics like the Marvel comics I read did. Maybe it's because my buddy Matt had mostly Marvels when he lent me books to read so that's what I was more familiar with. Or maybe I just liked the Spider-Man cartoon better.

Whatever clicked in my head to make this happen is less important than the fact that it happened. As I dug through my DC comics today, I considered how silly it is in a way. I mean, no one watches a movie trailer, sees the MGM logo and goes 'I tend not to like MGM movies so I probably won't like this one either'. To a degree, that's what I do with DC comics. It's not wrong or inaccurate, it's just weird.

If you're thinking this is going to end with me resolving to be more interested in DC and give them more of a chance, well, no. I scraped away about half of the box.

What? I said I don't like them as much. If I hated them, I'd get rid of all of them. That's the sign of progress.

Distracted by a Commercial

So Geico has, what, three mascot type commercials now? The gecko, the cavemen, and the pile of money with eyes on it, right?

And the money with the eyes on it is just creepy.

Ssh! I'm hiding!

Another 'Snapped' marathon, another day where paranoia starts to grip me and it's time to hide from womenfolk.

To be fair, there's been crazy guys in this waves of episodes as well. Still.

Did you know that when spousal murders occur than women are 3 to 4 times more likely to use a knife than a man is? I do now and I can't unlearn that. Hopefully the beer will erase that or I'll find it hard to ever relax in a kitchen again.
