The Muppet movies do confuse people. Due to 'The Muppets take Manhattan' lots of people think that Kermit and Piggy are married. On talk shows, Kermit has been very clear that the marriage was part of a movie and they weren't really married. On the other hand, Piggy argued the opposite view for awhile.
All three of the Henson related movies show different origins for the Muppet group. The original movie purports to show a dramatized version of what 'really' happened to bring the group together. 'The Great Muppet Caper' shows Kermit and Fozzie as brothers. 'The Muppets take Manhattan' shows the gang in school together, as well as footage of the main gang together as Babies.
Which draws extra confusion as the footage of the Babies led to a cartoon of Muppet Babies for seven years. 'A Muppet Family Christmas', a tv special in the late eighties, also shows footage of the Babies, just like 'Manhattan'. As the television footage tends to feel more like 'canon', this throws a wrench in the works.
Nuts, I've confused myself now.
