Frighteningly enough, I'm still a bit stuck in this 'pop' world. It's okay, I'm getting better.
Perhaps you saw the band name above and remembered their 'One Hit Wonder' song 'Lovefool'. Now you probably hate me for reminding you of it. When that song was first appearing, I was volunteering at a local college radio station on my buddy's show. They had received the album. We looked at it and saw 'Iron Man' on the track listing. Could it be the Black Sabbath song? We played it on the air and fell about the studio laughing with joy at their bizarre cover. They had a sense of humor. I was hooked. That lead singer Nina was mad hot didn't hurt any.
The other song I knew by them was from an earlier album with a slightly different style.
The song always felt like it should have been on the soundtrack to some 1960s spy movie, or an episode of 'The Man From UNCLE' perhaps. It's got a jangly, catchy Sergio Mendes style to it. From this song you can see where 'Lovefool' came from. It's not a style they stayed in for long.
It's not exactly subtle but it is a more complex narrative in the lyrics. At the very least, it's not mindlessly repetitive. It does remain catchy. I love the way the song soars around the chorus, as if the wind of the storm was picking up.
Another not-so-subtle concept delivered in an amusing way. And there's cowbell! Can't go wrong with cowbell.
Look, I'm not trying to say they're the best band in the world and had one song that entertained and annoyed the nation. I'm trying to say that you shouldn't hold that song against them. Try some of their other music as well.
